Office of Economic Development

Film, TV and Video
Since the inception of the Film Office in 1994, we have
been able to track the growth of the film industry increasing to 8 million
dollars in 2002 from 6 million dollars in 2001. This is the result of
film, television, video and still photography projects selecting Maui
County as their shooting destination. Prior to FY2000, this business was
procured utilizing then state of the art technology but in January 2000,
the County Film Office created two tools that are now actively used to
solicit new business
a locations book and a locations video. Also
completed in October of 2000 was a production guide(listing the local
crew base on the island, which is second only to Oahu's) and by December
2000 an upgraded website featuring all the aforementioned tools as available
to all those thinking of choosing Maui County as their filming destination.
In FY2003 the website will continue to be updated and stay current with
the trends for the future.
Additionally, a complete and updated photo library was
created utilizing existing location photos coupled with those of top Maui
based photographers. The photo library has been made available to the
State Film Office to assist them in further soliciting film industry business
for Maui County. Thanks to these pro-active marketing and promotional
efforts, the film office has continued to garner world wide support from
top flight film makers which will generate dollars for Maui County.
County film revenues have been steadily rising. Revenues
for the first 3 quarters of 2002 are in the range of 3.5 million dollars.
More than 300 projects ranging from feature films, to television commercials
to documentaries to music videos & still photo shoots came to Maui
County in FY 2002. And the trend to increase our production is on the
upswing.
Maui County and the State of Hawaii compete with many other
destinations for film business. To help us be more competitive, the Film
Offices of the Hawaiian Islands have worked diligently with the Legislature
to pass Act 221 in FY2001 as well as a Resolution
To create a Film Industry Board to work with the Film Industry. With the
enactment of
Act 221 the incentive to work in Hawaii was greatly enhanced. Countries
around the globe have come to realize the impact of the highly lucrative
film business and this Act
proves that Hawaii is just as aware of the impact to our economy.
Television commercials were another source of revenue for
the film industry. Nabisco,
Toshiba, Volvo, Marlboro, Novell and Toyota are just a few of the companies
who found the backdrop of Maui County the perfect way to spread the word
about their products.
Videos for the kids "Let's Be Safe" to a six
part Living Arts yoga series abounded. Music videos by the young singing
sensations The Moffits and L.L.Cool J also found
The beauty of the island to their exact specifications.
Television Shows. PBS's "Legendary Lighthouse"
series was filmed on Maui. Also The
Discovery Channel aired several shows that showcased our Island. Some
of these shows were, "I Survived", Animal Adventures" and
"Extreme Hawaii" . Also the Learning Channel, Fox TV, A&E
and "E Entertainment Television" all featured shows highlighting
Maui County.
Still photo shoots remain one of the top revenue producing
avenues of the film industry on Maui. In FY 2002 Maui County realized
over 1.9 million from companies including
Outer Banks Caralogue, Nike, Guess, Nordstroms, J.Jill, Vogue France,
Macy's, Crazy Shirt, Corona, and Minolta who utilized our locations.
Rounding out the film industry on Maui are Industrials
Films, Stock footage and Documentaries.
Marketing
FY 2002 was a great year for marketing film throughout
the State and Maui County. The Maui County Film Office placed newly designed
ads in the Hawaii Production Index as well as the Hollywood Reporter,
LA & NY 411, The Hollywood Creative directory and many other publications.
We will begin another exciting and extensive ad campaign in FY 2003.
To maximize exposure of the film office, Maui County worked
closely with the Film Offices of the Hawaiian Islands(the four County
Film offices). We worked as a group at Conventions, Film Festivals and
Trade Shows. The Film Offices also hosted a successful reception at the
Sundance Film Festival with many of the Industry Executives in attendance.
The Maui County Film Office continues to support the efforts
of the Maui Film Festival, The Hawaii International Film Festival, The
Maui Writers Conference and the Hawaii Filmmakers Initiative. The Maui
Film Festival continues into it's Fourth Year. FY 2002 had Clint Eastwood
honoured as the Silversword recipient. Because the festival is truly about
films it's a cultural positive for the Community of Maui. FY 2003 should
be a banner year for the Festival and the Island of Maui.
