Ocean Safety

County Lifeguard Equipment
Ocean Safety:
To provide and encourage ocean safety through public education and ocean recreation, and to assist in emergencies along Maui coastal waters, thereby providing safer beaches for the people of Maui County and visitors who use Maui County Beach Parks.

Ocean Safety Officers (lifeguards) are on duty everyday from 0800 - 1630 hours. As part of the island wide 911 Emergency system, all OSO are trained above and beyond USLA certifications and all are certified AHA First Responders. Each OSO is skilled in rescue techniques using equipment such as rescue boards, tubes and fins, jet skis, 4-wheel drive ATV’s, and first aid supplies.

Lifeguard Towers are located at these beaches:
South Side: Kamaole 1, 2, 3 Beach Parks
West Side: Hanakao'o Beach (AKA Canoe Beach), DT Flemming Beach Park
North Shore: Kanaha Beach Park, HA Baldwin Beach Park, and Ho'okipa Beach Park
East Side: Hana Bay (Summer months only)

Safety Tips

  1. Swim in Lifeguarded areas.
  2. Never swim alone.
  3. Do not dive into unknown water or into shallow breaking waves.
  4. Do not attempt to dive over large waves.
  5. Ask a Lifeguard about beach and surf safety before swimming.
  6. If you are unable to swim out of a strong current, signal for help.
  7. Rely on your swimming ability rather than a flotation device.
  8. Look for, read, and obey all beach and safety signs*
  9. If in doubt, don’t go out!
  10. Protect the environment. Refrain from touching all reefs. Help keep the beaches clean and keep Hawaii beautiful.
In emergencies call 911 immediately.
